Alberta Northwest Species at Risk Committee

A brand for thirteen municipalities

Thirteen northwest Alberta municipalities organised to make sure land-use policy accounted for their economies. We built the brand that let them speak with one voice.

Work Brand creation · Identity · Digital

In 2016 the Government of Alberta committed to permanently protecting 1.8 million hectares in the northwest. The land sat inside municipalities that hadn’t been consulted, and nobody had assessed what it would do to their economies.

Thirteen of them organised in response. NWSAR needed to be taken seriously by two levels of government, by its own member councils, and by an audience that did not always agree with it.

What we built

A complete brand from a standing start: the identity, the visual system, and the platform it lives on. The committee’s line, “Ensuring Local Voices are Heard”, had to carry an argument about economic consequences rather than sentiment.

The lockup, reversed

The organisational shape made it harder. NWSAR has founding members and associate members, a Chair and Vice-Chair drawn from member councils, and no authority to direct anyone. Every municipality had to be able to adopt the brand as its own. A system that felt like head office would have been politely ignored.

Since then

We have supported NWSAR continuously: content, maintenance, analytics and search. The site is live and current, six years on.
